Wildcats keep playoff hopes alive with 2-1 victory

Junior SanchezThe soccer schedule makers were kind to Pearl River Community College, as struggling Copiah-Lincoln paid a visit to the PRCC Sports Complex Friday.

Freshman Junior Sanchez scored twice, and the Wildcats held on for 2-1 victory over the Wolves in the men’s game, following an 8-1 rout by the Lady Wildcats in the women’s game.

The South Division wins kept PRCC’s playoff hopes alive for both teams, as the Wildcats improved to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in division, while the Lady Wildcats climbed to 6-5 and 4-3.

Sanchez, out of Oak Grove, got his first goal at 24:29 on an assist by Anthony Hertzke (Lucedale), then made it 2-0 at 68:24 after an interception and a counterattack for an unassisted goal.

Co-Lin (1-12, 0-7) got one goal back at 74:59, but was unable to get a tying score, despite tremendous pressure in the final 10 minutes.

PRCC’s playoff hopes got a big boost when Southwest defeated Meridian 4-1 in other action Friday. The Wildcats can help themselves further by defeating the Bears at Wesson on Wednesday, then beating Meridian at home next Friday.
