Pearl River Community College needed a little extra time to complete a sweep of Southwest Mississippi in MACJC South Division soccer action Friday night at the PRCC Sports Complex.
Jackson Turner (Leakesville) fired in the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime to power the Wildcats to a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Bears.
Turner helped Pearl River (3-2 overall, 2-1 in division) overcome a 1-0 deficit after Jaime Delor put Southwest (4-2, 1-2) ahead on a penalty kick early in the second half.
“You get that tunnel vision when the ball comes out,” said Turner, a freshman from Greene County High School. “I got the touch on it, got my head up and kicked it. With all the adrenaline, I didn’t even see it until it went in the back of the net.”
Turner’s pass set up Mark Johnson (Bay St. Louis) for the equalizer at 61:11, then he converted a pass from Anthony Hertzke (Lucedale) at 94:07 for the golden goal that won it for the Wildcats.
Delor, a freshman from Argentina, was a thorn in the Wildcats’ side in the first half, as he got six shots, two on goal. But after the PK, he was held to just two shots, both late in the second half.
“We do play better in the second half,” said PRCC coach Drew Gallant. “We made some changes at halftime. The ball was coming from (Francisco Alisiardi) to (Delor), so we shut down (Alisiardi) and that took Delor out of the game.”
