Second-half slump dooms Wildcats in loss to Hinds

The Pearl River Community College men let a two-goal halftime lead slip their fingers in a wild 6-4 defeat at the hands of HInds in non-division soccer action Tuesday night at the PRCC Sports Complex.

The Wildcats (4-5) used a three-goal flurry late in the first half to grab a 3-1 halftime lead. But the Eagles dominated the second half, putting in four unanswered goals, then adding a backbreaker seconds after the Wildcats cut the margin to one goal late in the game.

“The worst part is we prepared for them to do exactly what they did in the second half,” said Wildcat coach Drew Gallant. “We knew they were going to knock it long and play off of it. And we still couldn’t stop them.”

Hinds (4-3-1) dominated the first 25 minutes of play, taking a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. But freshman Jackson Turner (Leakesville) made a brilliant run up the right side to feed Mark Johnson (Bay St. Louis) for a 25-yard shot that got over the keeper’s head for a tying goal at 29:24.

Six minutes later, at 35:12, Tyler Polderman (Picayune) headed in a rebound off a corner kick from Johnson to give Pearl River a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, Johnson got his second goal of the night on a 30-yard shot for an unassisted goal.

But the second half belonged to the Eagles, who had 17 shots in the second half, eight on-goal, to just seven shots, two on-goal, for PRCC.

Freshman West Zimmerman (Bay St. Louis) got the Wildcats’ only score of the second half on an unassisted goal at 87:03, but Hinds answered just 17 seconds later with a clinching goal. Johnson led the Wildcats with five shots, four on-goal.

The Wildcat men will play at 6 p.m. Friday at Perkinston in a non-conference game against Jacksonville (Texas). Both PRCC teams return to South Division play next Tuesday at Mississippi Gulf Coast
